Frequently Asked Questions

What are your sessions like?

My sessions are client-centred and collaborative, meaning that you get to decide what we work on together and we go at your pace. I use an integrative approach to treating trauma and anxiety, which includes resilience based therapy, compassion focused therapy, body-based therapy, trauma sensitive mindfulness, culturally sensitve therapy, parts work, and EMDR processing.

How long do I need to be in therapy?

This is based on your own journey. If you experienced a single incident trauma in adulthood and had a relatively trauma-free childhood, therapy can be quicker in terms of results. If you have experienced significant trauma early on in life or over a period of time, EMDR therapy will be integrated with other therapies and the process may be a bit slower.

I typically see you once a week at first, this allows for therapy to move along at a good pace. We can discuss this together and make a plan that fits for you, because your needs come first.

What is EMDR?

EMDR is an effective mind-body therapy used to help people to heal from troubling symptoms of trauma, anxiety, depression, complicated grief, addictions, relational issues and more. EMDR can help you heal faster, permanently reduce impacts, and you are in charge throughout the process. We will evaluate together if EMDR is a good fit for your needs

EMDR has three phases:

Stabilization
We work together to calm your nervous system and emotions, using relaxation, guided visualization, and body based resources. Sometimes we will need to help the parts of you, like the inner critic and the inner child work better together. This prepares you for processing difficult memories without being overwhelmed by them. Sometimes this first phase is all you will need to help you feel better.

Reprocessing
You do not need to talk about what you have been through if that feels too tough for you. We can still reprocess memories effectively together. After reprocessing, you will remember what happened, but you will no longer feel disturbed by the memories.

Integration
We take we have learned in therapy together back out into the real world so that you can respond with wisdom to whatever life throws at you.

Note: These phases are circular, we may move back and forth through them in a way that works for you.

Do you offer a sliding scale?

I believe that therapy should be accessible to everyone; for this reason I reserve a number of reduced fee spots (based on financial hardship). Please contact me to discuss further.

Are you covered under extended health benefit plans?

If your health benefit plan covers you for a Registered Social Worker (RSW), and most do, I will offer you a detailed receipt for you to submit.
